Tigers of the Moharli Zone: Who Ruled and Who Rules Now
Now (October 2026): Field reports from 2024–25 say Chhoti Tara and her daughters Roma and Bijli now use Maya’s old Pandharpauni ground, while Telia remains contested. No official territory map is published.
Each row is labelled by evidence: Official (reserve publications), News (dated press reports) or Field reports (lodge and naturalist accounts, which often disagree). Territories shift every season; no live locations are published.
| Period | Tiger | Area | What happened | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Until 2015 | Waghdoh (T-33), male | Telia–Moharli core | Dominant male until younger tigers pushed him to the Devada and Junona buffer; died of old age in May 2022. | News |
| c. 2014–2022 | Madhuri (T-10), female | Telia Dam, later Moharli buffer | Mother of the Telia sisters; moved to the buffer after her daughter Sonam displaced her. | Official |
| c. 2015–2022+ | Sonam (T-24), female | Telia Lake | The dominant Telia sister. Later challengers are reported but not officially documented. | Official |
| c. 2014 – August 2023 | Maya (T-12), female | Pandharpauni and Tadoba Lake | Tadoba’s best-known tigress; missing since August 2023 and presumed dead. | News |
| c. 2019 | Matkasur (T-49 in a 2024 official account), male | Pandharpauni landscape | Documented at Ainbodi waterhole and widely reported as the dominant core male of that period. | Official |
| 2022 | Lara (T-19), female | Moharli buffer, then core near the Khutwanda–Palasgaon road | Left Telia, like her mother, and settled further east. | Official |
| 2022–2026 | Madhu / Chhoti Madhu (T-127), female | Agarzari–Pardi and Dewada buffer | Took over much of her mother Madhuri’s buffer range; reported with three cubs in 2026. | Official |
| c. 2024–2025 | Chhoti Tara, female | Pandharpauni and Moharli core (Maya’s former area) | Reported with a March 2024 litter; daughters Roma and Bijli share the area. | Field reports |
Landscape and Wildlife in Moharli Zone
The visitor experience moves between dry deciduous forest, bamboo, open edges and water-influenced habitat. Routes vary by the gate and the daily allocation; “Moharli” should not be used as a label for every southern route.
Landmarks on this side include Tadoba Lake, Telia Lake, Pandharpauni, Panchdhara, Irai reservoir edge. Tiger, leopard, dhole, sloth bear and gaur use habitat by ecology rather than tourism labels, so a report from one gate is not a promise for another.
