India Tiger Safari Cost — The Full Breakdown

A tiger safari in India can cost anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per person, and the headline number hides most of the story. This guide breaks the cost into its real parts — permit, jeep, guide, lodge, meals, transfers and tax — shows pricing by trip length, and converts it into CAD, USD, GBP and EUR.

What a tiger safari in India costs

Wild Excursions’ single-park packages currently run roughly ₹9,800–₹44,000 per person (about CAD 165–730) for 2 to 5 days, twin-share and land-only. Longer multi-park private journeys are quoted individually.

That range reflects real differences: a 2-day, 2-drive introduction at a buffer-zone lodge sits at the bottom; a 5-day, 8-drive trip with premium stays sits at the top. Season matters too — peak months and holiday weekends carry higher permit demand and lodge rates.

A 10- to 14-day trip across two or three reserves — our flagship 14-Day Tigers of Central India is the reference — is typically the equivalent of CAD 2,600–5,200 per person land-only, depending on lodge tier, before international flights. These are custom-quoted; see the currency table below for how we convert.

What you are actually paying for

Every honest safari quote is the sum of these lines. Ask any operator to itemise them.

A private jeep is the most common upgrade: it replaces a shared vehicle with one dedicated to your party, so you set the pace and the naturalist’s attention is undivided. It does not buy extra time or off-route access — forest timings and tracks still apply.

How price scales with days and drives

Single-park packages, per person, twin-share, land-only. Prices vary by reserve, season and lodge; these are current indicative bands.

Adding drives adds permit and jeep cost linearly; adding nights adds lodge and meals. The multi-park rows are quoted in CAD because that is how most international guests plan — India tiger safaris for Canadian travellers covers those trips in detail.

Conversions use roughly CAD 1 ≈ ₹60, USD 1 ≈ ₹85, GBP 1 ≈ ₹108, EUR 1 ≈ ₹92. International flights are never included in these figures — budget CAD 1,400–2,600 (or equivalent) return from most long-haul origins.

For Canadian travellers: we quote in CAD terms and keep flights separate so the comparison with Canadian-based operators is like-for-like. Payment is by international bank transfer, 50% deposit to confirm, balance 30+ days before departure.

What makes a tiger safari cheaper or more expensive

Biggest lever

Lodge tier

Comfort vs Luxury can more than double the land cost. The safari experience itself changes far less than the room does.

Timing

Season

Peak months (Mar–Jun) and holiday weekends carry higher permit demand and lodge rates. Shoulder dates cost less and can be excellent.

Vehicle

Private vs shared

A private jeep for your party raises the per-person cost; sharing lowers it. Most international guests choose private.

Depth

Number of drives

Four to six drives is the honest minimum to judge a reserve. More drives add permit and jeep cost but improve the odds.

Sharing fixed costs

Group size

A jeep and a transfer cost the same for 2 or 6. Four travellers sharing pay noticeably less per head than a couple.

Transfers

Route efficiency

A cheap room an hour from the wrong gate costs you drive time and transfer money. Gate-matched lodges are better value.

The comparison people ask for

India vs Africa on cost

A comparable multi-night luxury safari in India typically costs a fraction of an East or Southern African equivalent, before the long-haul flights most African itineraries require. Mid-range India trips undercut mid-range Africa trips by a wide margin too.

The experiences are not identical — India is forest and fixed tracks with the tiger as the headline animal, Africa is open plains and a broader big-cat and plains-game cast — so compare on what you want to see, then on price. Our luxury safari guide covers this in more depth.

Before you pay

Deposits, payment and cancellation

Bookings are confirmed with a 50% advance; the balance is due 30 or more days before departure. Refunds follow a sliding scale — 100% at 120+ days before departure, down to 0% within 30 days — with free rebooking offered as an alternative. Full terms are on our terms page.

Forest permits, once issued, are often non-refundable regardless of the operator’s own policy. Comprehensive travel insurance, bought when you pay your deposit, is strongly recommended.

Tiger safari cost FAQs

Direct answers on what an Indian tiger safari costs and why.

How much does a tiger safari in India cost?

Wild Excursions single-park packages run roughly ₹9,800–₹44,000 per person (about CAD 165–730 / USD 115–520) for 2 to 5 days, twin-share and land-only. A 10–14 day multi-park private trip is typically the equivalent of CAD 2,600–5,200 per person land-only, depending on lodge tier.

How much is an India tiger safari in Canadian dollars?

As a planning figure, roughly CAD 165–735 for a 2–5 day single-park trip on comfort lodges, and CAD 2,600–5,200 per person for a 10–14 day multi-park journey, land-only and before international flights. We quote in CAD terms for guests planning from Canada.

Are safari permits included in the price, or extra?

In a Wild Excursions package the forest permit, gypsy, driver, park guide, lodge, meals, transfers and GST are all included. If another operator quotes a low headline figure, ask specifically whether permits and jeep are inside it or payable at the gate.

What is the cheapest way to do a tiger safari in India?

A 2–3 day trip to one reserve, on a shared jeep, at a comfort-tier buffer-zone lodge, on shoulder-season weekday dates, with a group of four sharing fixed costs. Expect roughly ₹9,800–₹23,000 per person.

Is an India tiger safari cheaper than an African safari?

Generally yes — often substantially, at both mid-range and luxury levels, and before the longer flights many African itineraries require. The experiences differ, so compare on what you want to see first.

Why can’t you give one fixed price for a two-week trip?

Because lodge tier, season, party size and which permits we secure all move the number significantly. We give a firm, itemised written quote once those are confirmed.
