Pench zone guide · 2026–27
Best Safari Zone in Pench for Tiger Sightings
The short answer
For the 2026–27 season, Turia core (MP) is the most dependable zone for tigers, with river-fed waterholes and resident tigers led by the male L. Mark. Karmajhiri is quieter and rewarding but in transition after the tigress Langdi died in March 2026. On the Maharashtra side, Khursapar leads. For the best odds, mix two zones, go from March to June, and favour morning drives.

Pench's safari zones, ranked for tigers in 2026–27
Pench is two reserves stitched together by a river: the classic Madhya Pradesh park (Turia, Karmajhiri, Jamtara) and the quieter Maharashtra side (Sillari, Khursapar and others). Here's how our naturalists rank the zones as the season opens.
These are our field ratings, not official figures. Neither state publishes gate-wise sighting statistics.

1Turia (MP core)
The most consistent tiger zone in Pench, and the one most of the famous tigers have called home.
Turia is Pench's main gate and its tiger heartland. The routes follow the Pench river and the streams that feed it, through teak and open meadow, and water stays here deep into summer. Collarwali, the tigress who raised 29 cubs and starred in the BBC's "Tiger: Spy in the Jungle", spent her life in this part of the park. Today the big name is L. Mark (T74), Langdi's son, who is widely reported to dominate most of the tourism zone, with a younger male, Swastik, pushing at his edges. The catch is traffic: Turia takes the bulk of MP's daily vehicles.

2Karmajhiri (MP core)
Quieter, wilder and very rewarding, though the zone is in transition this season.
Karmajhiri gets only a small fraction of Turia's vehicles, which makes every sighting feel private. This was Langdi's country, the limping tigress born in 2008 who raised 10 cubs, L. Mark among them. Tourists were still seeing her in February 2026. She was found dead near Munara camp in the Karmajhiri range that March, aged about 18. Her old range is now open ground for younger tigers, so expect a season of new faces, and some unpredictability.

3Khursapar & Sillari (Maharashtra core)
Pench's Maharashtra side: closer to Nagpur, cheaper to book and much quieter.
The Maharashtra half of the reserve shares tigers with the MP side, since the animals cross the Pench river and the state line freely. The 2022 national estimate counted 41 tigers on the Maharashtra side. Khursapar is usually rated the strongest Maharashtra gate for tigers, while Sillari is known for wild dog packs and sloth bears. Each gate has its own weekly holiday, so check the day before you book.

4Jamtara (MP core)
The wildest corner of Pench, for people who value solitude over certainty.
Jamtara, on the Chhindwara side, has the smallest quota of any MP gate, just a handful of vehicles a shift. Tiger sightings are less predictable than at Turia, but tigresses with cubs do use the area. When you meet one here, you'll probably have her to yourself. The drive in through the villages and the rugged terrain add to the sense of being far from everything.
Why the best zone in Pench changes
Pench has lost two of its great matriarchs in four years, and that alone has reshaped where sightings happen.
- Matriarchs and their families: Collarwali's death in 2022 and Langdi's in 2026 each opened up prime ground. Daughters and newcomers take time to settle and become confident around vehicles.
- Male turnover: a dominant male like L. Mark shapes where tigresses raise cubs. Challengers like Swastik can redraw the map in a single season.
- Water: the Pench river and its pools decide where animals gather from March. A strong monsoon spreads them out, a weak one concentrates them.
- Cubs: a tigress with young cubs keeps to a small area for months, creating a hotspot that fades once the family disperses.

How Pench's tiger story has moved
Langdi (T-20) is born. She grows up with a deformed front paw that gives her her famous limp.
Collarwali (T-15) raises 29 cubs across eight litters, the most recorded for any wild tigress in India. Her story reaches the world through the BBC's "Tiger: Spy in the Jungle".
Collarwali dies of old age. Her sons and daughters spread across Pench and into Maharashtra.
L. Mark (T74), one of Langdi's cubs, rises to dominate most of the MP tourism zone, while Langdi's daughter Lakshmi settles a stable home range.
Langdi is found dead near Munara camp, aged about 18, after 10 cubs and a lifetime of sightings.
A younger male, Swastik, is reported challenging L. Mark's edges. Langdi's old Karmajhiri ground is up for grabs. Expect change.

Best zone by season

October – November
Turia core
The core reopens on 1 October. Thick, green cover and water everywhere, so Turia's established routes give the most dependable start.

December – February
Turia and Karmajhiri
Cold, misty mornings (January can touch freezing). Tigers bask on the tracks once the sun is up.

March – June
Turia, then Khursapar
The best season for tigers. Water shrinks to the river pools and waterholes, and afternoons reach 40–42°C in May.
The core of both states is closed from 1 July to 30 September. On the MP side, afternoon drives are also off every Wednesday and on Holi and Diwali. Full details are in Pench timings and rules.
How to choose your Pench zone
- Anchor at Turia. Put most drives in Turia core for steady odds.
- Add a quiet zone. One or two drives at Karmajhiri, Jamtara or Khursapar give variety and space.
- Book early. MP permits open 120 days ahead, and Karmajhiri and Jamtara have tiny quotas.
- Stay near your gate. Turia and Karmajhiri are far apart by road.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best zone in Pench for tiger sighting?
Turia core on the MP side is the most consistent, thanks to its river-fed waterholes and the tigers that hold territory there, led by the male L. Mark. Karmajhiri is quieter and very rewarding. On the Maharashtra side, Khursapar is usually rated best. Spreading drives across two zones gives the best overall odds.
Is Turia or Karmajhiri better?
Turia has the stronger, steadier tiger record and the most vehicles. Karmajhiri has far fewer vehicles, so sightings feel more private, but the zone is in transition after the death of the tigress Langdi in March 2026. Do both if you can.
Why does the best zone in Pench change?
Territories change hands. Collarwali died in 2022 and Langdi in 2026, and male tigers like L. Mark and Swastik contest ground. Tigresses with cubs create short-lived hotspots, and water levels in the river and reservoir shift animals from year to year.
Is the MP side or the Maharashtra side of Pench better?
The MP side has more tigers (77 in the 2022 estimate, against 41 on the Maharashtra side) and the famous Turia routes. The Maharashtra side is closer to Nagpur, quieter and cheaper. See our Pench MP vs Maharashtra comparison for the full picture.
How many vehicles enter Pench each day?
According to the reserve's FAQ, the MP core allows 34 vehicles per shift at Turia, 6 at Karmajhiri and 4 at Jamtara, plus 15 per shift in the Rukhad and Telia buffers.
