Moharli vs Kolara: Which Tadoba Gate Is Better?

Updated October 20266 min readBy the Wild Excursions naturalist team

The short answer

Moharli has the stronger long-term tiger record, the most famous routes (Tadoba Lake, Telia Lake, Pandharpauni), two core gates and the most resorts, so it's the best base for first-timers and anyone arriving via Chandrapur. Kolara is about an hour closer to Nagpur, a little less crowded, and surrounded by strong buffer gates, so it's ideal for short trips from Nagpur. Best of all: do drives in both.

Moharli vs Kolara, side by side

Both are excellent. The "right" gate mostly depends on where you're coming from and how much you mind sharing a sighting.

Choose Moharli if…

  • It's your first time in Tadoba and you want its most storied routes.
  • You're arriving by train at Chandrapur, or driving up from Hyderabad and the south.
  • You want the widest choice of resorts, from budget to luxury.
  • You'd like two core gates (Moharli and Khutwanda) and four buffer gates within a short drive.

Choose Kolara if…

  • You're flying into Nagpur and want the shortest transfer.
  • You have a short trip and want an evening drive on arrival day.
  • You prefer slightly fewer vehicles and like the idea of corridor buffers like Madnapur and Alizanza.
  • You're set on one of the area's top luxury lodges, such as The Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge or Svasara.

Or do both

On a three-night trip, our favourite plan is two nights on one side and one on the other, or a base near Navegaon in the middle. You get the best of both zones, and you've spread your luck across different tiger families. That's the single most effective thing you can do for your sighting odds.

Tigers don't read gate signs. Splitting your drives between zones is the surest way to improve your odds.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Moharli or Kolara gate?

Moharli has the stronger long-term tiger record and the most famous routes, past Tadoba Lake, Telia Lake and Pandharpauni, plus the most resorts. Kolara is closer to Nagpur, a little less crowded, and has excellent buffer gates around it. For first-timers coming via Chandrapur, choose Moharli. For a short trip from Nagpur, choose Kolara. Ideally, do drives in both.

How far apart are Moharli and Kolara gates?

Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road. It's fine for a planned change of base, but not for switching between a morning and an evening drive on the same day.

Is Kolara good for tiger sightings?

Yes. Kolara core is one of Tadoba's three most consistent zones, along with Moharli and Navegaon, and the Madnapur, Belara and Alizanza buffers around it see regular tiger movement.

Which gate is less crowded, Moharli or Kolara?

Kolara is usually a little quieter. Moharli is the busiest entrance in Tadoba, especially at weekends and in April and May. Khutwanda, the second core gate in the Moharli zone, is a quieter alternative.

Can I do Moharli and Kolara on the same trip?

Yes, and we often recommend it. Spend one night on each side, or base yourself in the middle near Navegaon. Spreading drives across two zones improves your odds of seeing tigers.
