If you have never booked a Tadoba safari before, the system of core zones, buffer gates, permit windows and Gypsy allocations can feel confusing.

Understanding Tadoba's Core and Buffer Zones
Tadoba is not one gate with one forest behind it. The reserve is split into a core area and a much larger buffer area, and each has its own set of entry points.
Core zone gates
The core is the strictly protected heart of the reserve, with limited daily vehicle permits. Its main tourism gates are:
Moharli — the busiest and best-connected gate, with the widest choice of resorts • Khutwanda — a quieter entry into the same broad tourism area as Moharli • Kolara — on the Chimur side, popular with repeat visitors and photographers • Navegaon — good all-round sightings, less crowded than Moharli • Zari and Pangdi — eastern gates leading into the lightly visited Kolsa range
Because core permits are capped, they are the first to disappear from the booking calendar — especially weekends and holidays.
Buffer zone gates
The buffer surrounds the core and has far more entry points, including Agarzari, Junona, Devada-Adegaon, Mamla, Alizanza, Sirkheda, Belara, Palasgaon, Nimdhela and Ramdegi.
A common misconception is that buffer means second-best. It does not. Tigers move freely between core and buffer, and several of Tadoba's most photographed tigresses hold territories that sit largely in buffer forest. Buffer safaris also tend to have fewer vehicles, shorter drives from many resorts, and easier availability.
Our honest advice: book a mix. Two core safaris and two buffer safaris across a two-night trip gives you more habitat variety and better odds than four drives through the same stretch.
Tadoba Safari Timings
Safaris run in two slots each day, and the exact times shift through the year with sunrise and sunset:
Morning safari — entry around sunrise, roughly 6:00 AM in summer and 6:30 AM in winter, running about four hours • Afternoon safari — entry in the early-to-mid afternoon, running until gate closing at dusk
Morning drives are cooler and generally more active for predators. Afternoon drives in the hot months (April to June) are excellent for waterhole sightings, when tigers come to cool off.
The core zone stays closed to tourists during the monsoon, typically from the start of July until early October. Selected buffer routes often remain open through the monsoon, which is a beautiful and completely underrated time to visit — green forest, dramatic light, and almost no other vehicles.
When Bookings Open — and How Far Ahead to Plan
Safari permits for Tadoba are issued through the Maharashtra Forest Department's official portal, and the booking window opens well in advance of the travel date — commonly around 120 days ahead.
Practical timelines that actually work:
Peak season (November to February) and long weekends: book 60 to 90 days out • Summer (March to June): 30 to 60 days out is usually sufficient • Weekdays in shoulder months: 2 to 4 weeks is often fine
If a date is already full, a limited number of Tatkal permits are released closer to the travel date at a premium rate. These are non-cancellable, so only use them when your plans are locked.
Cancellation rules are strict. Refunds shrink sharply as your date approaches, and beyond a certain cut-off no refund applies at all. Always confirm the current policy at the time of booking.
Full Vehicle vs Seat Booking
You can book a safari in two ways:
Full Gypsy — you take the entire vehicle (usually six seats). You control the pace, choose where to wait, and are not competing with strangers for the best side of the vehicle. This is essential for photographers and strongly recommended for families.
Per seat — you share the Gypsy with other tourists. Cheaper, but you have no say in how long the driver waits at a pugmark or an alarm call.
If wildlife photography matters to you at all, book the full vehicle. The extra cost is small compared to what you spend reaching Tadoba.
What You Need to Carry
Original photo ID for every adult in the booking — the name and ID number must match the permit exactly. Mismatches are refused at the gate. • Warm layers for winter mornings; open Gypsies at 6 AM in December are genuinely cold • Neutral clothing — olive, khaki, brown, grey • Water, sunscreen, cap, and any medication you need • Binoculars, which improve almost every sighting
Leave behind plastic bottles you plan to discard, loud speakers, drones, and any expectation of stepping out of the vehicle.
