Pench vs Kanha: Which Is Better?

Updated October 20265 min readBy the Wild Excursions naturalist team

The short answer

Pench is compact, under two hours from Nagpur, and very reliable for tigers at Turia, so it's ideal for short trips and families. Kanha is bigger and grander, with open meadows and the rare barasingha, and suits a longer, more immersive trip. They're about 5 hours apart, so many travellers do both.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Pench or Kanha?

Kanha is bigger and grander, with open meadows, the rare barasingha and classic central Indian landscapes. Pench is smaller, easier to reach (under two hours from Nagpur) and excellent for tigers at Turia. For a short trip, choose Pench. For a longer, more immersive one, Kanha, or ideally both.

How far is Kanha from Pench?

Roughly 200–250 km by road, about 5 hours, depending on which Kanha gate you're heading to.

Can I do Pench and Kanha in one trip?

Yes. It's one of central India's classic combinations: fly into Nagpur, do Pench, drive to Kanha, and fly out of Jabalpur (or back to Nagpur).

Which has better tiger sightings, Pench or Kanha?

Both are excellent. Pench's Turia zone is very consistent for its size, while Kanha's open meadows can make sightings spectacular. Plan four or more drives in either.
