Best Time for a Tiger Safari in India
Month by month · 2026–27 season
Quick answer
The best time for a tiger safari in India is April to June, when water is scarce and tigers stay near waterholes, but it is very hot. For comfort, choose November to February. Core zones in Central India are open October to June and close from 1 July to 30 September; Corbett’s Dhikala opens mid-November.

The whole year
Tiger safari month by month
“Sighting odds” is our judgement for Central Indian reserves on a four-to-six-drive trip, not a guarantee. Rajasthan and Uttarakhand follow a similar pattern; Assam and the Sundarban differ (see below).
| Month | Sighting odds | Weather | Crowds and permits | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | Fair | Warm, humid, green | Low after reopening on 1 Oct | Lush scenery; tigers hard to find in thick cover |
| November | Fair to good | Pleasant, cool mornings | Rising; Diwali weeks busy | Good start of the comfort season |
| December | Good | Cold mornings (can drop near 5°C in an open Gypsy) | Very high over Christmas–New Year | Book 60–120 days ahead |
| January | Good | Cold mornings, mild days | High | Comfortable for families |
| February | Good to very good | Mild | Moderate | Our favourite balance of comfort and odds |
| March | Very good | Warming, 30s°C | Moderate; Holi week busy | Leaves fall, visibility improves |
| April | Excellent | Hot, high 30s to 40°C+ | Moderate to high | Tigers around water; long hot afternoons |
| May | Excellent | Very hot, often above 42°C | Lower in weekdays | Best odds, hardest conditions |
| June | Excellent to good | Hot until the monsoon breaks | Low | Last weeks before the core closes on 30 June |
| July–September | Poor | Monsoon | Core closed; some buffers open | Only for buffer-zone and green-season travellers |

November to February
Winter: the comfortable season
Winter is the easiest time to travel. Mornings start cold, sometimes close to 5°C in an open Gypsy at sunrise, and afternoons are pleasant. Forests are still green after the monsoon, so tigers have more water and cover and can be harder to find. Expect to need more drives for a first sighting than in May.
The light is excellent: mist on meadows, soft gold in the evening. December holidays are the busiest weeks of the year, so book Tadoba core permits in the 60–120 day window. Families and first-timers usually prefer this season. Read best time to visit Tadoba for one park in detail.
March to June
Summer: the best season for sightings
As waterholes dry up, tigers come to the few remaining pools to drink and cool off, sometimes lying in the water for hours. Leaves fall from teak and other deciduous trees, so you can see further into the forest. This is when most of the classic tiger photographs from Central India are taken.
The cost is heat. May afternoons often pass 42°C, and an open Gypsy has no shade. Take the early morning slot, carry water and a scarf, and rest at midday. Tadoba’s timings shift to start at 5:30 am from May. If you can handle it, April and May give the best odds of the year.

July to September
Monsoon: buffer zones only
From 1 July to 30 September, core zones in Madhya Pradesh and Tadoba are closed for the breeding season and because rain damages roads. Some buffer zones stay open. In Tadoba, the buffer runs a monsoon timetable and can close at short notice for floods or heavy rain.
Monsoon safaris suit people who want green forests, fewer vehicles and lower lodge rates, and accept that tigers are harder to see. It is not a season we recommend for a first tiger trip.

Beyond the calendar
Four more things that change your odds
Crowds and cost
Weekdays vs weekends
Weekend permits cost more (Tadoba core: ₹6,800 vs ₹5,800 per Gypsy) and roads are busier. Weekday trips are cheaper and calmer.
The biggest lever
Number of drives
Four to six drives in one reserve is the minimum we recommend in any season. In winter, plan for the upper end.
Flexibility
Core and buffer mix
A good buffer can match a busy core. Mixing both protects the trip if core permits sell out.
Plan around them
Weekly closures
Tadoba core closes every Tuesday and buffer every Wednesday. Check each park’s weekly closure before fixing dates.
Not just tigers
Best time by what you want to see
| Goal | Best months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tiger photography | April – June | Animals at water, thin cover, strong but harsh light; use the first and last hours |
| Comfortable family trip | November – February | Cool days, green forest, school holidays in December |
| Birdwatching | November – February | Winter migrants arrive and resident birds are active through the morning |
| Sloth bears | March – June | Bears feed on mahua flowers and fruit and dig termite mounds in the open |
| Leopards in Rajasthan | October – March | Cool enough for leopards to sit out on rocks for longer |
| Rhinos in Kaziranga | February – April | Grass is burned or short, so visibility is better |
| Lions in Gir | March – May | Dry forest, lions near water |
| Green forests, fewer people | October; buffers in monsoon | Lush scenery, lower lodge rates, harder sightings |

Crowds and permit pressure
Indian holidays that sell out safari permits
| Period | When | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Diwali | October or November (varies each year) | Very high demand for about a week |
| Christmas – New Year | 24 December – 2 January | The busiest weeks of the year; book in the first release window |
| Republic Day long weekend | Around 26 January | Short spike, especially near big cities |
| Holi | March (varies) | Busy long weekend |
| Summer school holidays | Mid-May – June | More family travel despite the heat |
| Any weekend | Saturday and Sunday | Higher permit prices in Tadoba (₹6,800 vs ₹5,800 per core Gypsy) and busier roads |
When to book
How far ahead to book for each season
- 1
Peak holidays: as soon as the window opens
Tadoba releases permits at 12:00 am IST, 120 days before the safari date. For Christmas and Diwali, book on release day.
- 2
Winter and spring weekends: 60–90 days
Core permits for Saturdays and Sundays go first. Buffer gates usually have space later.
- 3
Summer weekdays: 30–60 days
Easier availability in May and June, especially Monday to Friday.
- 4
Last minute: Tatkal
Tadoba opens Tatkal booking at 8:00 am IST, three days before the safari. Useful, but never plan a trip around it.

Quick answers about timing your trip.
What is the best month for a tiger safari in India?
April and May give the best sighting odds in Central India. February and March are the best balance of comfort and odds.
Can you see tigers in winter?
Yes. December to February is comfortable and sightings are regular, but thicker cover means you may need more drives than in summer.

Core zones in Madhya Pradesh and Tadoba close from 1 July to 30 September. Some buffer zones, including Tadoba’s, stay open subject to weather.
When does Corbett open?
Corbett’s Dhikala zone opens around 15 November and closes in mid-June. Other zones such as Bijrani open earlier in October.
