Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary — often shortened to UKTR — is compact, quiet, and home to some of the most photographed tigers in central India. Fewer vehicles, closer to the city, and a genuinely wild feel. Here is what you need to know.
Where It Is and Why It Matters
Umred-Karhandla spans roughly 190 square kilometres across the Nagpur and Bhandara districts of Maharashtra. It functions as a vital corridor, linking the Tadoba landscape with forests to the north and east, which means tigers, leopards and other wildlife move through and settle here.
The sanctuary shot to fame through Jai, a famously large male tiger who ranged across this forest and became one of India's most followed wild tigers before he disappeared in 2016. His lineage — and a succession of resident tigresses raising cubs — has kept UKTR on the map for serious wildlife watchers.
What makes it special is the ratio. Tadoba is superb, but on a peak weekend you may share a sighting with fifteen vehicles. At Umred-Karhandla, you may well have a tigress and her cubs to yourself.
Safari Zones and Gates
The main entry points are:
Karhandla gate — the primary and best-known entry, on the Umred side • Gothangaon gate — excellent tiger territory and a favourite among photographers • Paoni gate — on the Bhandara side, with more open, undulating terrain • Pauni / Chargaon buffer routes — quieter drives with good general wildlife
Each gate has a small daily permit quota. That scarcity is exactly what keeps the experience uncrowded, but it also means booking early is not optional on weekends.
Wildlife You Can Expect
Tigers are the headline. UKTR consistently holds resident breeding tigresses, and cub sightings here can be extraordinary.
Leopards are present in healthy numbers, and the terrain — rocky outcrops and open scrub — gives better viewing chances than in dense forests.
Indian gaur (bison) move through in large herds, particularly in the cooler months. A gaur bull at close range is genuinely imposing.
Sloth bears appear regularly, especially near rocky ridges in the early morning.
Wild dogs (dhole) hunt here, along with sambar, chital, nilgai, wild boar, jackals and hyenas.
Birdlife is excellent — Indian pitta in the monsoon, paradise flycatchers, several eagle and owl species, and strong waterbird activity near the reservoir.
Best Time to Visit Umred-Karhandla
November to February: Comfortable weather, good general wildlife activity, and the best gaur herds. Mornings are cold in an open vehicle, so carry layers.
March to June: Prime tiger months. As water sources shrink, movement concentrates and sightings peak. May is hot — regularly above 42°C — but the odds are the year's best.
Monsoon (July to September): Typically closed to tourists during the breeding season, though buffer route availability varies year to year.
If you want one recommendation: late March to early May, with morning safaris.
How to Reach Umred-Karhandla
From Nagpur: roughly 60 km to the Karhandla gate, about 1.5 hours • From Nagpur airport: about 55 km • From Umred town: 20 to 25 km — this is the closest base
That proximity is UKTR's quiet superpower. You can land in Nagpur in the morning and be on an afternoon safari the same day, which is impossible with most Indian tiger reserves.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited compared to Tadoba, which is part of the charm. Options include a handful of resorts and homestays around Umred and near the gates, plus MTDC and forest department accommodation.
Local homestays are worth considering — home-cooked Vidarbha food, hosts who know the forest intimately, and rates far below resort pricing.
Some visitors stay in Nagpur and drive out for each safari. That works, but it means a 4:30 AM departure for a morning drive. We generally advise staying closer.
Combining Umred-Karhandla with Tadoba

Permits are issued through the Maharashtra Forest Department system, with limited daily vehicles per gate. Original photo ID matching the booking is required at entry for every adult.
Weekend and holiday permits go quickly. Weekdays are far easier and, honestly, better — fewer vehicles means calmer sightings.
