Pench is the forest that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, and it still looks the part — teak forest, open meadows, the Pench river cutting through the middle, and langurs calling from the canopy.
It is also the most convenient tiger reserve in India for anyone flying into Nagpur, with the nearest gates barely 90 minutes away. Here is how to plan a Pench safari properly.
Two States, One Forest
Pench straddles the border between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and the two sides operate as separate reserves with separate booking systems.
Pench Madhya Pradesh (Seoni and Chhindwara districts) is the larger and better-known half, with the widest choice of resorts and the highest tourist volume.
Pench Maharashtra (Nagpur district) is quieter, closer to Nagpur, and considerably cheaper. It has excellent forest and good tiger density, with a fraction of the vehicles.
Animals do not recognise the border. Tigers cross regularly. Choose your side based on logistics and how much company you want on a sighting.
Madhya Pradesh side
Turia — the main gate and the busiest, with the largest resort cluster nearby • Karmajhiri — beautiful mixed habitat, generally fewer vehicles, strong for general wildlife • Jamtara — on the northern edge, quiet and scenic • Rukhad and Teliya — buffer zones with good tiger movement and easy availability
Maharashtra side
Sillari — the principal gate, closest to Nagpur and consistently good • Khursapar — quieter, with excellent forest • Chorbahuli, Khubara and Paoni — smaller gates with limited daily permits and a genuinely remote feel

Wildlife in Pench
Tigers are the draw, and Pench holds a healthy breeding population. Sightings are less concentrated than Tadoba in peak summer but very good through the season.
Leopards are common but elusive, more often seen at dawn and dusk.
Indian wild dogs (dhole) are a Pench speciality. Pack hunts here are among the best in India, and watching a dhole pack work a meadow is arguably more thrilling than a static tiger sighting.
Herbivores are abundant — chital in enormous herds, sambar, nilgai, gaur, and the four-horned antelope in drier areas.
Sloth bears, jackals, Indian wolves on the fringes, and healthy crocodile populations along the river.
Birding is superb, with over 280 species recorded — Malabar pied hornbills, Indian pittas in the monsoon, several eagle species, and excellent waterbird activity around the Pench reservoir.
Best Time to Visit Pench
October to November: The forest reopens, the meadows are green, and the light is beautiful. Comfortable weather, moderate sightings.
December to February: Cool and pleasant, with cold mornings that require a proper jacket. Excellent for birds and dhole activity. Peak tourist season.
March to June: Best tiger probability. The forest dries out, waterholes concentrate wildlife, and the meadows around Alikatta come alive with activity. Hot — often above 40°C in May.
July to September: Core zones close for the monsoon. Selected buffer zones stay open and the forest is spectacularly green.

How to Reach Pench
Nearest airport: Nagpur (NAG), about 90 minutes to Sillari and around 2 to 2.5 hours to Turia • Nearest railhead (MP side): Seoni or Nagpur • From Nagpur city: roughly 70 km to Sillari, 100 to 110 km to Turia • From Jabalpur: about 200 km, 4 hours — useful if combining with Kanha or Bandhavgarh
The Nagpur–Jabalpur highway makes access unusually smooth compared to most Indian reserves.
Booking Your Safari
The two sides use different systems: Madhya Pradesh permits are issued through the MP Forest Department's online portal, while the Maharashtra side runs through the Maharashtra Forest Department.
