Nagpur to Tadoba: How to Reach Tadoba National Park (Complete Travel Guide)

How to reach Tadoba National Park from Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Delhi. Distances, routes, driving times, trains, flights and which gate to head for.

Nagpur to Tadoba: How to Reach Tadoba National Park (Complete Travel Guide)

Tadoba is one of the easiest tiger reserves in India to reach, and one of the easiest to reach badly. Plenty of travellers land in Nagpur, book a resort without checking which gate it serves, and end up driving 90 minutes in the dark before a 6 AM safari entry.

This guide covers every route into Tadoba and, more importantly, tells you which side of the reserve to aim for.

The Nearest Airport, Railway Station and Town

Airport: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur (NAG) — the gateway for almost every visitor. It has direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Railway stations: Nagpur Junction (NGP) is the main hub with excellent national connectivity. Chandrapur (CD) is much closer to the Moharli side and works well if a convenient train serves it.

Nearest towns: Chandrapur for the Moharli and Khutwanda side; Chimur for the Kolara side; Umred for buffer gates on the western approach.

Nagpur to Tadoba: Distance and Driving Time

Distance depends entirely on which gate you are entering.

Gate — Distance from Nagpur — Driving time

Kolara — ~110 km — 2 to 2.5 hours

Navegaon — ~115 km — 2.5 hours

Moharli — ~140 km — 3 to 3.5 hours

Khutwanda — ~135 km — 3 hours

Agarzari (buffer) — ~140 km — 3 hours

Zari / Pangdi — ~170 km — 3.5 to 4 hours

Umred-Karhandla — ~60 km — 1.5 hours

Roads are good, largely via the Nagpur–Chandrapur highway with a rural stretch at the end. Expect the last 20 to 30 kilometres to be slower, with villages, livestock and occasional wildlife crossings. Drive carefully after dark — leopards and sloth bears use these roads.

Which Gate Should You Head To?

This is the decision that shapes your whole trip.

Moharli side (Moharli, Khutwanda, Agarzari, Junona) — the most developed side, with the widest range of resorts from budget to luxury, plus restaurants and reliable connectivity. Best for first-time visitors, families and anyone wanting choice.

Kolara side (Kolara, Navegaon, Alizanza, Sirkheda, Belara) — closer to Nagpur, quieter, with excellent tiger territories and fewer vehicles on many routes. Popular with photographers and repeat visitors. Accommodation is more limited, so book early.

Zari and Pangdi (Kolsa range) — the least visited part of the reserve, and the longest drive. Wonderful if you want solitude and forest, less predictable for sightings.

Golden rule: book a resort on the same side as the gates on your permits. Crossing the reserve between gates can add well over an hour each way, and safari entry does not wait for you.

Mumbai to Tadoba

Fly to Nagpur (about 1 hour 30 minutes) and drive on. Overnight trains from Mumbai to Nagpur or Chandrapur also work well and save you a hotel night. Driving the full 850 km is possible but takes 13 to 14 hours and is rarely worth it.

Pune to Tadoba

Direct flights to Nagpur are quickest. By road it is roughly 800 km and 13 hours, usually split across two days.

Hyderabad to Tadoba

The most underrated approach. It is around 500 km by road — about 8 to 9 hours — and you can drive directly to the Moharli side without going through Nagpur at all. Trains to Chandrapur are also convenient.

Delhi to Tadoba

Fly to Nagpur (about 1 hour 45 minutes), then drive. Several overnight trains connect Delhi to Nagpur if you prefer rail.

Bengaluru and Chennai to Tadoba

Fly to Nagpur. Rail options exist via Chandrapur but journeys are long.

Getting Around Once You Arrive

Hire a car with a driver from Nagpur. This is what we recommend and arrange for nearly every guest. Self-driving is fine on the highway, but the local roads, unfamiliar gate approaches and 5:15 AM starts are easier when someone else is driving.

Do not rely on taxi apps. Coverage around the reserve is thin and unreliable, especially before dawn.

Your resort's vehicle may handle transfers, but confirm this in writing before you arrive.

Safari Gypsies are separate. You cannot enter the park in your own car. Safari vehicles and guides are allocated at the gate against your permit.

Sample Itinerary from Nagpur

Day 0 (evening arrival): Land in Nagpur, drive to your resort, dinner, early night.

Day 1: Morning safari, breakfast, rest through the afternoon heat, afternoon safari, dinner.

Day 2: Morning safari, checkout, afternoon safari at a different gate if timings allow, drive back to Nagpur.

Day 3: Morning flight or train home.

That is four safaris across two nights — the practical minimum for a worthwhile Tadoba trip.

Let Us Handle the Logistics

We are based in Umred, between Nagpur and the reserve. Airport pickups, resort selection matched to your permit gates, safari bookings and on-ground support are all things we do every week — and being local means we can fix problems in an hour rather than a day.
