Best Buffer Zones in Pench: Rated for Tigers and for Scenery
The short answer
The best Pench buffer zone for tigers is Telia, right beside Turia, which also draws attention for black leopard sightings. For scenery and peace, choose Rukhad. Khawasa is the convenient extra drive from Turia-side resorts. Buffer safaris cost less than the core (about ₹8,500 per Gypsy for Indian visitors) and see far fewer vehicles.

How we rate Pench's buffer zones
Pench's buffers are smaller and less developed for tourism than Tadoba's, but they are a good way to add quiet drives, nature trails and extra tiger chances to a Turia-based trip.
We rate each one on tiger potential (our naturalists' field view for 2026–27) and jungle beauty (landscape, light and how the drive feels). Neither the reserve nor anyone else publishes official sighting ratios for individual buffers.
Pench buffer zones, one by one

Telia (Teliya) MP buffer
The busiest MP buffer, right beside Turia, so the same tiger families often wander through. It has also drawn attention in recent seasons for melanistic (black) leopard sightings.

Rukhad MP buffer
A beautiful, quiet buffer on the north side of the reserve, with a forest rest house and a nature trail run by the reserve.

Khawasa MP buffer
The buffer around the Khawasa junction on NH44, close to many Turia-side resorts.

Kumbhpani MP buffer
A remote buffer with a forest rest house and very little tourist traffic.
Why add a buffer drive?
- Fewer vehicles: just 15 a shift across the buffer, against 34 at Turia core.
- Cheaper: roughly ₹8,500 per Gypsy, against about ₹10,100 for the core.
- Nature trails: official walking trails at Rukhad, Telia, Turia and Karmajhiri, something the core never allows.
- A backup: when core permits are sold out, a buffer drive keeps the trip alive.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best buffer zone in Pench?
Telia, next to Turia, is the strongest buffer for tigers and has drawn attention for black leopard sightings. Rukhad is the most beautiful and peaceful. Khawasa is convenient for Turia-side stays.
Can you see tigers in the Pench buffer zone?
Yes. Tigers move freely between the core and buffer, and Telia in particular sees the same families as Turia. Odds are generally lower than in the core, but so is the traffic.
How much does a Pench buffer safari cost?
Roughly ₹8,500 per Gypsy for Indian visitors on the MP side, including permit, guide and vehicle. That's less than a core Gypsy at about ₹10,100. Rates are approximate and confirmed at booking.
How many vehicles are allowed in the Pench buffer?
According to the reserve's FAQ, 15 vehicles in the morning and 15 in the afternoon across the Rukhad and Telia buffer zones.
Are Pench buffer zones open in the monsoon?
The core of both states closes from 1 July to 30 September. Buffer access in the monsoon depends on rain and the forest department's decisions that year, so check before planning a monsoon trip.
