What the extension includes

A Cultural Counterpoint to the Jungle

The Taj Mahal was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, after her death in 1631. Construction began in 1632 and ran for over two decades — the marble mausoleum itself was finished by 1648, with the surrounding mosque, guest house and courtyards completed by 1653, built by a workforce of roughly 20,000 and supported by around a thousand elephants hauling material. It remains the single most recognisable monument in India, and added onto a tiger safari, it turns a wildlife trip into a fuller picture of the country.

01

Sunrise at the Taj

Enter at first light, before the crowds and the heat, when the white marble turns pink and gold.

02

Agra Fort

The red sandstone fortress-palace where Shah Jahan himself was later imprisoned, with a distant view of the Taj from his tower.

03

Private Guide & Transfers

A dedicated heritage guide and air-conditioned car for the extension, arranged around your safari dates.

04

Combine with Delhi

Add Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi on the same extension for a fuller North India heritage circuit.

Beyond the Taj

Three Sites, One Extension

The Taj Mahal is the headline, but Agra Fort and the two optional side trips below are what turn a single monument visit into a proper two or three days.

Agra Fort

The red sandstone fort Akbar built in the 1560s, later the site of Shah Jahan’s own downfall — his son Aurangzeb held him under house arrest here for the last eight years of his life, confined mainly to the octagonal Musamman Burj. Shah Jahan is said to have died there in 1666, gazing across the river at the mausoleum he’d built.

Mehtab Bagh

A quiet garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj, built as a "moonlight garden" around 1652. Without the crowds of the main complex, it’s the best spot for an unobstructed sunset view and a mirror-still reflection shot.

Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar’s abandoned capital, 37 km from Agra — an entire red sandstone Mughal city built in the 1570s and deserted within 15 years over water shortages. Worth a half-day detour on a 3-day extension.

How it flows

Sample Agra Extension Itinerary

A rough shape for the extension — we adjust timings around your actual safari transfer and hotel.

Day 1

Arrive & Agra Fort

Transfer in from your safari park (or Delhi), check in, then Agra Fort in the afternoon light followed by sunset at Mehtab Bagh, across the river from the Taj.

Day 2

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal

Gate entry at sunrise, before the crowds and the heat build up — typically 2-3 hours inside the complex with your guide, then a relaxed rest of the day or your onward transfer.

Day 3 (optional)

Fatehpur Sikri

A half-day trip to Akbar’s abandoned red sandstone capital before departing — added on the 3-day version of this extension.

Before you go

Good to Know

  • The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday.
  • Sunrise entry avoids both the worst crowds and the midday heat, and gives the best light on the marble.
  • Modest dress is expected at all three sites, as with any active mosque or mausoleum in India.
  • Large bags, tripods, food, and some electronics are restricted inside the Taj Mahal complex — your guide will brief you before entry.

Built around your safari

One Itinerary, No Extra Planning

We don’t sell the Agra extension as a separate package bolted onto your safari after the fact — it’s built into the same itinerary, with a single point of contact for both. Tell us whether you’d rather do Agra before your safari as a warm-up or after it as a wind-down, and we’ll arrange transfers, guide and hotel accordingly. Travelling via Ranthambore? Bharatpur’s bird sanctuary sits on the same road — see our Bharatpur birding extension.

Questions

Extension to Agra: FAQs

How do I add an Agra extension to my tiger safari tour?

Tell us your safari dates and parks when you enquire, and we’ll slot a 2-3 day Agra extension either before or after your safari, with all transfers, guide and entry tickets arranged.

Which tiger safari tours can be combined with Agra?

Ranthambore and Jim Corbett pair most naturally with Agra given the geography, but we can build a heritage extension onto any of our tiger safari itineraries — Tadoba, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Pench included — with an internal flight or train connection.

How much time should I set aside for Agra?

Two full days is enough to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort at a relaxed pace, with a night in between. Three days allows a second, quieter visit to the Taj or a side trip to Fatehpur Sikri.

Is the Taj Mahal closed on any day?

Yes — it is closed to visitors every Friday. We build extension itineraries around this automatically.

Can I visit Agra without doing a tiger safari first?

Yes, though most of our Agra extensions are booked by travellers already doing a tiger safari tour with us, since the incremental cost of adding a guide and transfers to an existing itinerary is lower than a standalone trip.
