Tadoba

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is Maharashtra's oldest and largest tiger reserve, and one of the highest tiger-density reserves in India at 6.46 adult tigers per 100 sq km. Its open, dry deciduous terrain makes for some of the most reliable daytime tiger sightings in the country, and it's the closest major tiger reserve to Nagpur — where we run trips every week.

Why Tadoba

India’s Highest-Density Reserve, Made Easy to Reach

Highest Tiger Density

At 6.46 adult tigers per 100 sq km (2023 Phase IV monitoring), Tadoba has one of the highest tiger densities of any reserve in India — more territory overlap means better odds per drive.

Open, Dry Terrain

Unlike the denser sal forests of Kanha or Bandhavgarh, Tadoba’s drier deciduous forest and open lake edges make tigers easier to spot in full view rather than glimpsed through cover.

Individually Famous Tigers

Maya, the "Queen of Tadoba," and the Telia Sisters — Sonam, Lara, Geeta and Mona — are well-documented, territorial tigresses that regular visitors specifically hope to encounter.

Closest Reserve to Nagpur

Tadoba is the nearest major tiger reserve to Nagpur, where we’re based — the shortest transfer of any reserve on this site, and the one we run most often.

Questions

Extension for Tadoba: FAQs

Is Tadoba the best tiger reserve in India for sightings?

It’s among the best by the numbers — 6.46 adult tigers per 100 sq km is one of the highest densities in India, and its open, dry terrain makes sightings easier to actually see in full rather than partially hidden by dense cover.

Why is Tadoba called Maharashtra’s oldest tiger reserve?

116.54 sq km was declared Tadoba National Park in 1955. The adjacent Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1986, and the two were merged into the present Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in 1995.

Who are Maya and the Telia Sisters?

Maya, known as the "Queen of Tadoba," is one of the reserve’s most photographed and territorial tigresses. The Telia Sisters — Sonam, Lara, Geeta and Mona — are daughters of the tigress Madhuri, and among the most well-documented tiger families in the park.

How far is Tadoba from Nagpur?

About 140 km, roughly a 3-hour drive — the shortest transfer to any major tiger reserve from Nagpur, which is why we run Tadoba trips more often than any other park.

How many days should I spend at Tadoba?

Two days (four safaris) gives a solid chance at a sighting given the reserve’s tiger density; three to four days lets you rotate between zones as sighting reports shift, which matters more here than at lower-density reserves.
