How to Reach Tadoba from Outside India

Updated October 20267 min readBy the Wild Excursions naturalist team

The short answer

Fly into Delhi or Mumbai, take a 1.5–2 hour domestic flight to Nagpur, then drive 2–3.5 hours to the reserve. If you're flying via the Gulf, Qatar Airways (Doha) and Air Arabia (Sharjah) fly direct to Nagpur, so there's no domestic connection. Bring your original passport: it's the only ID accepted at Tadoba's gates for foreign nationals.

Getting to Tadoba, by region

Tadoba sits almost exactly in the centre of India, and Nagpur, the city closest to it, is a domestic hub with a couple of useful international links. Here's how the journey usually works.

UK & EuropeFly to Delhi or Mumbai (non-stop from London and several European hubs), then a domestic flight to Nagpur. Or fly a Gulf carrier to Doha and connect straight to Nagpur.About 14–18 hours door to Nagpur

Australia, Singapore & SE AsiaFly to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Chennai, then a domestic flight to Nagpur (1.5–2 hours).About 12–18 hours door to Nagpur
Indicative only. Airline schedules change, and the Doha–Nagpur service runs on selected days of the week.

Step by step: from your front door to the safari gate

  1. Get your visa sorted. Apply for an Indian e-Tourist Visa online if your nationality is eligible. Do this weeks ahead, not days.
  2. Fly into Delhi or Mumbai (or straight to Nagpur via Doha or Sharjah). Clear immigration and customs at your first Indian airport.
  3. Take a domestic flight to Nagpur. About 1 hour 30–45 minutes from Delhi or Mumbai. Leave at least 3 hours between flights if you're changing terminals or airlines.
  4. Drive to the reserve. Kolara gate is about 2–2.5 hours from Nagpur, Moharli about 3–3.5 hours. A pre-booked private car is the norm.
  5. Rest, then safari. Arrive the day before your first drive, because gates open between 5:30 and 6:30 am.

Visa, passport and safari documents

  • Visa: most visitors need one. Many nationalities can use the Indian e-Visa. Always use the official government portal, never a third-party site.
  • Passport at the gate: Tadoba's rules say foreign nationals must show their original passport. Photocopies and phone photos are refused, and the number must match the one on your safari permit exactly.
  • Permits in your name: safari permits are issued per guest. We need your passport details when booking.
  • Full-day safaris: foreign visitors pay ₹70,000 per Gypsy for a full-day buffer safari (Indian visitors pay ₹50,000). Regular morning and evening drives use the standard Gypsy fees.

When to come

March to June is peak tiger season. Water is scarce, animals gather at the few remaining pools, and sightings are at their best. It's also very hot: expect 40°C and above in May.

November to February is the comfortable choice: cool, misty mornings, warm afternoons and very good sightings. Pack a warm layer for the open Gypsy at dawn.

July to September, the core is closed for the monsoon. Only buffer drives run, weather permitting.

Combining Tadoba with more of India

Tiger walking through the forest at dusk
  • Tadoba + Pench: both are within easy reach of Nagpur. Two reserves, one domestic flight.
  • Tadoba + Kanha or Bandhavgarh: a classic central India tiger circuit, with a long but scenic road transfer.
  • Tadoba + the Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur either side of a Nagpur flight.

Practical tips for international visitors

Money

Cards work at most lodges, but carry some rupees for tips and small purchases. ATMs are scarce near the gates.

Connectivity

Mobile signal is patchy near the forest. Buy an Indian SIM or eSIM on arrival, and download offline maps.

Health

Talk to a travel clinic about vaccines and malaria advice before you go. Carry sunscreen, repellent and any regular medicines.

Clothing

Neutral colours for safaris, a warm layer for winter mornings, and modest clothing for towns and villages.

Frequently asked questions

How do international tourists reach Tadoba?

Fly into India (usually Delhi or Mumbai), take a domestic flight to Nagpur, then drive 2–3.5 hours to the reserve. Travellers flying via Doha or Sharjah can reach Nagpur directly on Qatar Airways or Air Arabia.

Is there an international airport near Tadoba?

Yes. Nagpur's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is the nearest. It has direct flights to Doha and Sharjah, and domestic flights to every major Indian city.

Do foreigners need a special permit for Tadoba?

No special permit is needed beyond the normal safari booking, but foreign nationals must carry their original passport to the gate. No other ID is accepted. Full-day safaris have a separate, higher fee for foreign visitors.

Do I need a visa to visit Tadoba?

Most nationalities need an Indian visa. Many can apply online for an e-Tourist Visa through the official Indian government portal well before travel. Check your own eligibility on the official site.

What is the best time for foreign tourists to visit Tadoba?

March to June for the best tiger odds (it's hot, 40°C+ in May), or November to February for pleasant weather and good sightings. The core zone is closed from July to September.

Can I combine Tadoba with the Taj Mahal?

Yes. Fly Delhi → Nagpur for Tadoba (and often Pench), then fly back to Delhi for Agra. Our Tigers and Golden Triangle style itineraries do exactly this.
